Resume Tips

Always have someone other than yourself proofread and critique your resume!

Include your full legal name, your current home address with zip code and the best phone number and email address for someone to use when trying to get in touch with you.

  • Bullets
  • Sentence Structure
  • Effective Communication

Overuse:

  • Bullets are excellent if you don't overuse the format. Excessive bullets can be interpreted by some to be indicative of a lower-level career.

Proper Use:

  • Bullets should be used to draw attention to your most important and notable accomplishments and make your resume stand out.
  • It is also highly advisable to have a friend and/or trusted professional review your new resume to give you their feedback.

Avoid:

  • Avoid sentences that use over used terms such as "worked with" or "managed" as they are not the most powerful verb phrases to use.

Proper tense:

  • When writing your resume never use the first person.
  • Don't worry about length. Use as much space as required to adequately describe your experience and accomplishments.

How well do you communicate?

  • Your is an indicator of your potential on-the-job performance so it is the only communication tool you have with potential employers.

Evidence disputes Disbelief

  • Give examples of measurement criteria or specific numeric data then you conveyed that you are a performance oriented person. This evidence is what separates the truly exceptional from the marginal.
  • 90% of the resumes we review don't conclude with either a result or numeric quantification. This is a red-flag for employers.
